The cover has finally come off of Alfa Romeo's hyper hot hatch. The high-performance Mito GTA concept will take the stage in Geneva with aggressive styling, less weight, a stiffer suspension, and 240 horsepower.
Serious credentials are required for an Alfa to earn the signature GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerito) badge, but this mighty mini car seems to hit the mark. The word "Alleggerito" means reduced weight in Italian, and that's just where Alfa started. The roof and mirror fairings and rear spoiler are made of carbon fiber and the braking system, suspension, and some parts of the chassis are composed of aluminum to lower the car's center of gravity.
The 240 ponies were squeezed out of the tiny turbocharged 1.8-liter engine with the help of direct injection, dual variable valve timing, and advanced electronic management systems. The engine was designed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies who built on the experience gained in the production of Twin Spark and Alfa V-6 road and race engines.
Handling was improved by way of new front suspension geometry and a stiffened rear suspension. Ride height has been reduced by 20mm and the revised chassis showcases an "active" suspension system. The system counteracts acceleration, braking, and steering forces by "actively" firming up separate corners of the car.
