2009 GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid

What weighs three tons, wears 22-inch wheels, and returns 21 mpg in the city? GMC's new Yukon Denali Hybrid.

The premise of a full-size SUV with the fuel economy of a mid-size sedan isn't anything new. After all, General Motors launched its 2-Mode hybrid system in its Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe models in early 2008, and the company has slowly rolled the technology throughout its full-size truck portfolio. Cadillac's Escalade received the hybrid treatment later that year, and pickup models - Chevy's Silverado and GMC's Sierra - followed around the same time.

The Yukon Denali Hybrid is a new offering for 2009, allowing GMC to slip some green credibility into its ultimate luxury SUV.

The Denali Look

Attaching the Denali name to the Yukon Hybrid triggers the same changes as when it's applied to a conventional Yukon: not only is the burly SUV treated to body-colored door handles, running boards, and taillamp surrounds, but chrome is liberally slathered across the truck's exterior. Grilles, running boards, door trim, and roof rails are all coated in the stuff, but nothing catches the eye like the massive 22-inch, eight-spoke aluminum wheels (to help smooth the ride, GM fits the Denali Hybrid with magnetically adjusting shock absorbers). Happily, GM has toned down the "Hybrid" insignia to five emblems compared with the Denali's more ostentatiously identified relatives; two of the emblems are simply a stylized "H."

The chrome is conspicuously absent inside, but the Denali's cabin is full of burled wood trim. Not only does the material appear on the door panels, upper dashboard, and center console, the Denali-exclusive steering wheel wraps a band of wood along its outer edge.

What's missing, however, are the cosmetic (and somewhat functional) changes made to regular Yukon Hybrids, for which engineers reshaped the hood, grille, front bumper, chin spoiler, and lightweight wheels in an attempt at reducing drag and improving fuel economy. Few (if any) of these revisions are applied to the Yukon Denali Hybrid -- a shame, as there's quite a bit of energy involved with rotating four wheels sized for the likes of Conestoga wagons.

Electric Volvo C30-Volvo unveiled its first electric C30 prototype

Volvo unveiled its first electric C30 prototype in September, but already has a second-generation car ready to show at the 2010 Detroit auto show in January. Volvo will build a test fleet of its new electric C30 to help further its development.

For the new C30, Volvo took a step away from electric prototype it showed at the Frankfurt auto show in September. The second-generation electric C30 has a complete interior, full instrumentation, and improved battery packaging. It has the same passenger space as a gasoline-powered C30 and offers equivalent safety.

“The first prototype helped us identify the main challenges, such as battery packaging and safety issues,” said Lennart Stegland, director of Volvo’s special vehicles group. “We have addressed these challenges without compromising the C30’s personality. I am very happy with the result. The electric C30 in Detroit is a much more complete product.”

Powering this new electric C30 is a 111-hp (82-kW) electric motor hooked up to a 24-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, giving the car a total range of 150 km (93 miles). The sprint to 60 mph takes less 11 seconds and the car will continue on to a top speed of 81 mph with a fully charged battery. Charging the 24-kWh battery pack takes less than 8 hours from a 230-volt power outlet.

Volvo will use this car as a pattern for building an extra 50 test vehicles. The test fleet will be on the road beginning in 2011, although Volvo does not specify where the test fleet is headed. The company merely says that it will be instrumental in helping Volvo develop electric cars.

Toyota FT-CH Concept-Looking for a smaller Prius?

Looking for a smaller Prius? Toyota officially announced the Prius sub-brand of vehicles (all powered by the Hybrid Synergy Drive system) will become a reality at the 2010 Detroit auto show. Toyota's FT CH concept will be smaller and cheaper than the current Prius if it reaches production. Though the FT CH is quite a bit smaller than the Prius, it is nearly as wide and has been designed to maximize interior volume.

No details have been released as yet about platform, powertrain, battery, or performance, but it's likely that the car will be sufficiently smaller and lighter to accommodate an engine that's smaller than anything currently on offer in a U.S. Toyota. A smaller Nickel-Metal-Hydride battery pack will probably be used in order to keep the price down, but if Lithium-Ion technology is not out of the question if the prices fall enough. Downsizing and light-weighting of all components, along with continued improvements in efficiency will probably lower prices to within spitting distance of rival Honda's Insight, though the more sophisticated hybrid system is likely to deliver superior fuel economy.

Toyota's European design center won the styling competition with this muscular hatchback shape that is aimed at engaging the "8-Bit" video-game set. Okay, if they say so. The airy interior suggests it will connect with any device an 8-Bit driver could possibly own, and as shown the seats are minimalist mesh units that look very light (it was locked, so we can't tell you what they feel like). Toyota officials suggest that unless the reaction to this styling model is negative, past history suggests we'll see a production version within 20 months, though the official green light has not been given as yet.

In other Toyota sustainability news, it was announced that a fully electric small car like the FT-EV2 will likely go on sale in 2012 with a lithium-ion battery, capable of traveling 100 miles. A fleet of 100 FCHV fuel-cell powered Highlanders is in use, achieving 431-mile range with 68-mpg (gasoline equivalent) fuel economy. Development is progressing toward a target on-sale date of 2015. And 150 plug-in Priuses are in the works with 13-mile full-EV range and a 65-mph top electric speed.

Lincoln rolled out a new MKX crossover at the 2010 Detroit auto show. Like most refreshes these days, the MKX packs more power, new technology, and a variety of refinements. Oh, and it finally gets the corporate Lincoln nose.

Possibly the biggest update to the 2011 MKX is Ford's latest Duratec V-6 engine. Updating the current engine required punching out an extra 200 cc's to 3.7L. When combined with variable timing on all of the camshafts, the result was an extra 40 hp and 30 lb.-ft. of torque for a total of 305 hp and 280 lb.-ft. More impressive is that along with these double-digit increases in power ratings, the MKX retains its claimed class-leading ability to return 25 mpg on the freeway, and does all of this on regular unleaded. A "smart" charging system that reduces engine drag and a manually shiftable six-speed automatic transmission help further this cause.

Vying for the title of "biggest update" is Ford's MyFord and MyLincoln technology, a new user interface for the climate, radio, navigation, SYNC, and other controls. Similar in concept to BMW's iDrive and other similar systems, MyLincoln replaces the traditional controls with a touchscreen and a five-way controller similar to those found on cell phones and iPods. A standout feature in the new interface is the touch-sensitive sliders for the stereo volume and fan speed. Rather than traditional push-buttons or knobs, the controls are integrated into the touchscreen and can be adjusted by either tapping a point on the slider bar or by dragging a finger across the screen. The new system also includes Ford's iTunes music tagging feature through SYNC.

Complimenting the new center stack and its fancy new infotainment system is a refreshed interior with all-new seats and upgraded materials. Aluminum accents are offered along with two wood trim options, and contrast stitching abounds. Beneath the skin, heavy use of sound-deadening materials and acoustic glass has quieted down the interior so much that Lincoln claims the MKX now exceeds its competitors at Lexus and Audi in noise suppression.

On the outside, the somewhat boxy MKX of yore has been updated with Lincoln's new split-wing corporate grille, broad fender arches and new rocker panels. Around the back, new taillights feature hidden LEDs for illumination and hidden rear parking sensors to clean up the bumper. Larger ovoid exhaust tips and new 18- and 20-in. wheels finish the look.

Rounding out the MKX's impressive list of updates are several technological features the model has been lacking that should help catch it up to the competition. New features include adaptive cruise control, an emergency braking assist system, hill start assist, a blind spot warning system, a cross-traffic alert system, trailer sway control, plus Ford's Easy Fuel capless fuel filler system and MyKey programmable keys. Lincoln has also upgraded the MKX's brakes and retuned the shocks, springs, and stabilizers for flatter handling in corners while retaining a luxurious ride.

The 2011 Lincoln MKX is expected to go on sale sometime in 2010 as a 2011 model, but Ford hasn't released a final on-sale date or pricing.

2010 Hyundai Blue-Will Hybrid Hatchback Concept

Hyundai plans to show off its Blue-Will hybrid concept to North America during the 2010 Detroit auto show next week. The Blue-Will debuted in Seoul last March, but the visit to Detroit will be the first time we've seen the concept in person.

"Blue-Will's bold character lines and innovative design language give the perfect expression to the advanced eco-friendly technologies found beneath the skin," said Oh Suk-Geun, executive vice president of design for Hyundai. "At a time of rising concern about the environment and our energy future, Blue-Will demonstrates to eco-conscious car buyers everywhere that Hyundai has practical hybrid solutions that will appear on the next generation of vehicles."

The Blue-Will, also known as the HND-4, features a host of alternative energy and eco-friendly technologies including recycled materials and solar panels integrated into the all-glass roof. Other tricks include a thermal generator to turn exhaust gas heat into electricity and a new Lithium Polymer battery, the first to be used in a car. It powers a 100 kW electric motor that's mated to Hyundai's new 152-hp 1.6L direct-injected four-cylinder engine, both of which send power to the ground via a continuously variable transmission. As a parallel hybrid, the Blue-Will can be powered be either motor alone or any combination of the two as driving conditions dictate. This new hybrid architecture is more than just a science experiment - it will be the basis of the new Sonata Hybrid that will debut in the U.S. later this year.

Not all of the Blue-Will sleek technology is under the skin. All the lighting up front is LED to save power, and it only gets better inside. Transparent Organic LEDs create a high-resolution, ultra-thin color screen in place of the traditional gauge cluster, while a touchscreen replaces the traditional center stack and takes over all of its duties, including climate control, stereo control, navigation, and even the transmission gear selection. Topping off the green creds is the Eco-Coach, a graphic-based program designed to teach you to be a more economical driver.

Here are all the juicy details on the 2011 Honda CR-Z. we've seen this car several times in prototype and concept form, but now the real car is out and the reactions are very positive.

*Heavily influenced by 1984-1991 Honda CRX and 2000-2004 Honda Insight

*Front engine, front wheel drive

*Two-passenger hatchback

*1.5 liter SOHC I-4 engine combined with Honda's sixth generation IMA system, which adds a 10 kilowatt DC electric motor and 100 volt nickel metal hydride battery

The sheet just dropped on Honda's new affordable sport coupe and here are few more tasty morsels we discovered:

1) CR-Z is slated to go on sale in the US in the late summer of 2010. Japanese and European markets will be the first to receive the CR-Z, which will be sold as a 2+2 in both markets (as was the original CRX). Japan takes delivery February 26th, Europe a 3-4 months after.

2) Honda expects volume of the CR-Z to be 15,000 per year, shared between the U.S. and Canada. This is but a fraction of the expected volume of the Insight at launch, which was projected at 100,000, in a ratio of 90:10 between the US and Canada).

3) Honda's preliminary estimates put CR-Z at 2670 lbs for the 6-speed manual version and 2725 lbs for the CVT. For comparison's sake, here are the weights of a few notable gas sippers we tested recently: 2009 Honda Fit/2521 lbs, 2010 Honda Insight/2735 lbs, and 2010 Toyota Prius/3171 lbs. Out of curiosity, we looked up the CR-Z's grandfather, the 1985 Honda CRX HF, and found that it weighed a paltry 1718 lbs - which explains its tiny 58 horsepower engine.

4) In addition to the unique powertrain controller which offers up normal, economical, and sport driving modes, CVT equipped CR-Zs will have four distinct gear ratios available via paddle shifters. Why four instead of the Insight's seven ratios? Honda says it determined that four ratios provide simpler shift logic and just work better with the performance characteristics of the CR-Z. We say, fewer ratios probably made downshifts more substantial and, thus, sporty feeling - but we won't know until we try for ourselves.

5) CR-Z will be produced in Japan at Honda's Suzuka Factory which also produces Civic/Civic Hybrid, Insight, Fit, and JDM models Jazz and Edix.

So just how does it look in person? As the journalist next to me exclaimed as the curtain fell, "Wow - it looks a lot more like a CRX than I expected."

Which is to say that in person, the proportions are not quite as nose heavy as our studio shots would lead you to believe. From the side and rear, your eye is drawn to the bend of the C-pillar and the blacked-out strip of rear glass - both of which definitely recall the CRX - more than the CRZ's overall profile.

Inside is a mix of current and familiar Honda design and styling as the view from the driver's seat is a mix of Civic, Fit, and Insight. The view behind the front seats, however, should raise some eyebrows. The cargo cubbies and fold down divider are so clearly meant for passengers, the obvious question is, "Why didn't they make this a 2+2 for the US market as well?"

Overall, the CR-Z follows the same prototype-to-production arc that all recent Honda and Acura products have taken. It is not quite as aggressively styled as what the studio had in mind with the concept CR-Z, but not nearly as watered down as some of Honda's competitors end up when they transition from clay to production spec.

Will it succeed? We'll wait for a test drive before rendering any sort of judgment, but if you go by faces in the crowd during the press conference, the competition is clearly paying close attention. We spotted several key engineers and execs from Ford, GM, Hyundai, and VW in the crowd. Just a coincidence at one of the world's most important auto shows? Not a chance. When Honda says the words compact, affordable and sporty in the same sentence, you can bet the competition around the world takes notice.
