Yamaha’s new YFZ450R and improved its track-ready prowess ten-fold.

TPR is well known for its part in producing the Spyder Quad, a tarantula-themed custom Suzuki LTR450 that made its debut with Douglas Wheel Technologies at the 2008 Indianapolis Dealer Expo. But the Spyder Quad, with all its industry-leading aftermarket additions, was destined to be a show piece that, to this day, has never hit the track.

This season, TPR took a different approach with the Tarantula Performance Racing project Yamaha YFZ450R. TPR built the YFZ-R to debut its new line of Race Safer Pro combination nerf bar and heel guards, but the TPR crew also wanted this quad to perform on the track and not just be another show queen.

Tarantula Performance Racing spent the past eight months building its latest custom quad, the TPR project YFZ450R.

Race Safer

You can’t race safe, but you can race safer. With that goal in mind, TPR designed its Race Safer Pro nerf bars with a bend and shape different from the 20-year-old flat design used by nearly every other nerf bar manufacturer.

The new Race Safer Pro nerfs are completely different from most other nerf bar designs and were developed to improve rider safety.
Unlike some other nerfs, the TPR parts fit perfectly and bolted right up easily without any unnecessary bending, cutting or drilling.

The specially designed bend of the outer nerf bar creates a pocket to protect the rider’s feet and legs from a competitor’s wheels. The bend also works to keep the rider securely planted on the quad. Furthering that goal, the foot peg teeth are angled five degrees in toward the quad. This works in conjunction with the rider’s natural standing position to prevent a rider’s boot from sliding unintentionally towards the edge of the peg.

Brian Fredmonsky, the chief design engineer for TPR, said use of a longer foot peg with the new teeth angle still increases maneuverability without sacrificing sure footing.

“The Race Safer Pro nerf bars were built with one goal in mind, and that was to increase rider safety,” says Fredmonsky.

The TPR nerfs also address the most common complaint associated with Yamaha’s new YFZ450R. Most every YFZ-R owner looks to lower the stock foot peg position. The pegs on the TPR Race Safer Pro nerfs are one inch lower than stock. By lowering the pegs, riders can transition smoother and faster from sitting to standing for approaching track obstacles with a greater sense of where the frame may bottom out on the track.

Stitched and riveted nylon webbing stretches from the bar to the frame in both the heel guard and nerf bar positions to eliminate any gaps where the rider’s foot could slip through. The foot peg, nerf bar and netting are available in three color options: black, blue and gray, with the bar available in standard polished aluminum.

The TPR project YFZ-R also features TPR’s standard MX-Series front bumper, which includes the customizable and replaceable center insert. The removable insert can be completely customized to include a rider’s number, name, sponsor logo or other detailed image in a variety of colors.

Engine

Perry, Fla. based ATP Racing Engines increased the stock YFZ-R power output by 20 percent with changes to the head, cams, piston, exhaust, intake and fuel management.
ATP picked up the build at the Steel City motocross national in Delmont, Pa., this summer and took the quad to its Florida shop to start the engine work.

In stock form, the YFZ450R has a restrictive intake and exhaust system limiting its power potential. Perry, Fla. based ATP Racing Engines signed on to give this quad a much needed horsepower boost.

On ATP’s dyno, the stock YFZ-R cranked out 44 horsepower. Not bad for the local tracks, but those numbers needed to increase to compete on a national level.

Mike Walker, the owner of ATP Racing Engines, quickly got to work on the YFZ-R head. ATP installed a 13.5:1 JE piston, ported and polished the cylinder head and put it through extensive flow testing. A competition Serdi valve job followed the flow testing to improve the valve seating. The quad retained its stock valves and seals, but ATP installed its own custom intake and exhaust camshafts.

According to Walker, his cams were re-degreed based on the initial dyno runs to provide more lift and duration to improve the YFZ-R’s overall power band.

“Most of your valve job work will improve your low-lift air flow numbers, which, will in turn translate to seat of the pants for a rider, better throttle response and initial hit, things of that nature,” says Walker.

To improve air flow, ATP installed Twin Air’s new Power Flow kit, which includes a replacement clamp-on style mount that eliminates the restrictive stock YFZ-R backfire screen. The kit included the filter and all necessary hardware.

ATP also installed a Motoworks full SR4 exhaust system and FMI controller to complement the engine work. The SR4 system consists of high quality components including T-304 stainless steel, pipe bends that are tig welded to perfection, extruded aluminum mounting brackets, a lightweight aluminum housing and a CNC machined flange.

ATP has a good working relationship with Motoworks, which sponsors their AMA ATV national riders. Walker’s extensive experience with the Motoworks FMI allowed him to easily dial the quad in on his dyno.

“The Motoworks tuner is a great tuner for your average guy,” Walker said. “It’s very easy to install and very easy to work with.”

A full Motoworks SR4 exhaust system complemented the ATP engine work.

Motoworks’ tuner uses CTL (Computer tuning logic) to optimize the air-to-fuel ratio across the entire RPM range. Motoworks’ engineering provides precision fuel settings and virtually unlimited tuning adjustments. The Motoworks FMI does not interfere with the stock ECU map and does not require complicated computer programs for adjustment.

The end result of the engine work was an impressive 20 percent power increase with the TPR project YFZ450R now cranking out 52 horsepower over a smooth power curve. Walker ripped a few test holeshots on the project quad himself at the Unadilla national track, where TPR met up with ATP to get the quad back this summer and continue the build.

“The power delivery is good on the bike,” Walker said. “You put a good rider on it, and you can win races with it.”

Suspension

After the engine work, it was time to install a set of ATV Four Play’s MGC MX long-travel front a-arms, which received a trick paint job from Capital Powder Coating in Suffield, Ohio.
Fox Shox and ATV Four Play worked together to increase the front suspension travel by nearly an inch over stock.

The YFZ450R has great stock suspension, but the quad is still about an inch shy of the maximum 50-inch width permitted in the AMA ATV National Motocross Championship series.

So Tarantula Performance Racing partnered with ATV Four Play owner Tom Skladzien to widen the front end with a set of his championship winning MGC MX long-travel A-arms. The Wadsworth, Ohio based company had yet to design a set of their arms for the new Yamaha and built its first set for the TPR project YFZ450R.

Yamaha’s engineers, according to Skladzien, obviously put a lot of thought into designing the front end of the new YFZ-R with the increase in rake and narrow lower frame rail to improve cornering and bump steer. But you can always build a better mouse trap.

“We moved the shock location to offer a plusher ride and (riders) have the capabilities of changing caster and camber,” says Skladzien.

ATV Four Play’s A-arms use the same length shock as the stockers, which measure in at about 18.5 inches, but the arms increase the YFZR’s wheel travel to 10.5 inches from the stock limit of 9.8 inches.

Fox Racing Shox spent two weeks building a set of its Float X Evol front shocks for the ATV Four Play A-arms. The Float X Evol front shocks weigh in at a mere 4.6 pounds and slim down the TPR project YFZ450R. The Floats shave weight due to their elimination of the standard coil springs and instead feature a main air chamber for ride height settings and the Evol air chamber for bottom-out settings.

Also in the “suspension” department is a set of ATV Four Play’s Generation II Soft Bars. The pivoting handlebars work much like your typical quad shock. An allen-head bolt can be tightened or loosened to stiffen or soften the bar travel on each side. Four Play’s Progressive Dampening System ensures the resistance increases the more you tighten the allen head and as the bar moves through its travel – just like an ATV shock.

TPR also teamed up with ATV Four Play on a set of its new Generation II Soft Bars, which pivot and help absorb impacts to reduce rider fatigue.

The Soft Bars, which feature a 12-degree bend similar to the CR high bend bar, are made of T-3 2024 aluminum tubing and billet T-6 6061 aluminum. The pivot areas are sealed, but one great aspect of the bars are grease zircs, which allow you to maintain the life of the pivot bushing.

TPR kept the stock aluminum swing arm and bolted on a Fox Podium X rear shock. The Podium X, like the front shocks, features dual-speed compression adjustments in addition to rebound and preload adjustments. RPM provided its Dominator II axle to widen the rear. RPM axles dominate the pro ranks in just about every series because of their strength. We’ve installed a number of axles during our years of riding and the RPM by far installed the easiest with the best fit and finish.

Controls, Tires and Wheels

A number of other performance parts were added to improve protection, handling, ergonomics and appearance.

B-Tek Performance provided another industry first for the TPR project YFZ450R with its single-bolt aluminum chassis SKID-EZ skid plate. The skid plate slides in place by hooking around the lower frame rails and is the first in the industry to use only one bolt to secure the skid to the quad. The single-bolt allows for quick installation and removal.

Bill Barth, owner and co-founder of B-Tek, said he has not experienced a single failure in six years of testing with A-class riders in New York.

TPR replaced the stock coolant hoses with a set of CV4 pure silicone hoses to help keep operating temperatures down.
A DWT Champion in a Box wheel kit, which included their front Rok N Lok wheels, combined with a set of Maxxis soft-compound Razr MX tires improved traction on the YFZR.

“It’s made for the racer who has to wrench on his own machines,” says Barth. “The last thing you want is to have to fight with a skid plate.”

Also in the protection department, HMF Racing provided a set of its aluminum headlight deletes, which bolt into the headlight locations to protect the wiring tucked underneath the front plastic.

Cycra supported the project with a set of Stealth hand guards to deflect track roost. To improve grip comfort, Spider Grips sent several of its SLT and A3 ATV grips. Both products matched the Quadtech seat cover, which installed easily, features added grip and padding and is less likely to rip than the stock cover.

CV4 sent a set of its pure silicone coolant hoses, which improve coolant flow and hold up to hotter temperatures longer than the stock hoses. Galfer provided a set of stainless steel brake lines front and rear that further improved the quad’s already phenomenal braking response. Hinson Racing sponsored the project with a billet aluminum clutch cover and a Hinson clutch stack and springs.

Another new product included on the quad is the Douglas Wheel Technologies Champion in a Box wheel kit. The kit includes four pro-level, aluminum beadlock wheels with mud plugs, mounting hardware and a DWT hat. These wheels were introduced by DWT in 2009 and feature several improvements over its standard rims.

The rear G2 beadlock wheels are lighter than the DWT original Ultimate wheels. The rear wheels feature an improvement to the nut plate attachment and better fatigue resistance with their shot-peened wheel rings.

The Rok-N Lok front beadlock wheels feature a mesh-like screen in the center of the aluminum rim to keep stones and track debris out of the rotor and other hub parts. The Universal Built-in Rock Guard — as DWT calls it — works with all stock front hubs and most aftermarket hubs. Wrapping the wheels is a set of Maxxis’ proven soft compound Razr MX tires.

To improve the quad’s looks, Capital Powder Coating in Suffield, Ohio, treated a number of the quad’s parts to the company’s trademark “chameleonization” paint scheme. Capital gave the front A-arms a trick looking fade and added some shimmer and shine to other parts, including the DWT beadlock rings, front motor mounts and miscellaneous brackets. The end result is one fast-looking motocross quad sure to perform as good as it looks.

Yamaha Unveils 2010 YFZ450X ATV-brand new


The YFZ450X ($8,499) is meant for use in tight trails and GNCC-style riding.You’ll find the same great shock package as on the YFZ450R with some key changes for woods riding.

The ATV featured a lighter chassis, higher-performance engine, upgraded suspension, improved ergonomics and several other upgrades over the standard YFZ450. Motocross racers and dune riders gushed about the machine and raved about its prowess, to the point where trail riders and others who purchased a standard YFZ couldn't help but to feel a little bit jealous.

"Where's our faster acceleration?" they asked. And suddenly the ergonomics and suspension that felt so right on the standard YFZ450 ATV now felt dated after knowing what else was possible.

Yamaha folks dodged the direct questions, and talked about the new R version as being a special edition of sorts. But they also seemed to avoid eye contact when confronted about the possibilities about a slightly more narrow, trail-oriented version of this upgraded YFZ. Clearly, they were hiding something - until now.

Big blue has taken the wraps off its 2010 ATV lineup, and the star attraction is a new model called the YFZ450X. By doing so, Yamaha did more than just claim its own stake to the 24th letter in the alphabet (think about it - DVX, DS 450 X, TRX 700XX, KFX, 525 XC, MXR, 450 MX, etc), it infused fresh life into a sport quad market that is threatening to grow stagnant, given the state of that end of the scene right now.

For 2010, Yamaha also added some new colors to a few of its ATVs, including the top Grizzly and the popular Raptor 250, while dropping two models that hadn't been pulling their weight the last couple of years (the Big Bear 250 and Wolverine 350).

Pacific United States-Excellent ATV Riding Areas

At about 3.79 million square miles, the United States is a vast nation - the world's third largest by land area. The diversity of our terrain provides off-road riders with an all-you-can-eat buffet of ATV riding choices available for the taking -deserts and dunes of the southwest, towering peaks in the Rocky Mountains, dense forests and the countless lakes of the Midwest, stunning views from atop the Ozark Mountains and the colossal riding areas of the rolling Appalachians.

If you live in the Western United States or want to travel out there for a change in your ATV riding terrain, here are six great spots in the Pacific U.S. region to get you started.

Imperial Sand Dunes

Perhaps the most famous off-road destination in the country, and one of the most popular ATV riding areas in the world, the Imperial Sand Dunes (frequently called Glamis) of Southern California near the Mexican border includes approximately 118,000 acres for off-highway vehicles like ATVs, dirt bikes, sand rails, side-by-sides and trucks.

Riding the Imperial dunes for the first time is daunting, with difficulty ranging from easy to white knuckles. Getting lost is a concern, as the terrain is always morphing, and the scenery blends together. The payoff is riding in an endless desert paradise seemingly designed exclusively as a high-speed ATV riding oasis.

Mojave Desert

A spectacular getaway for residents of the Southwest, and anyone looking for a change of pace, the Mojave Desert in California contains some of the greatest high desert riding in the country. Terrain varies from enormous valley stretches to mostly treeless hillsides that bring riders thousands of feet above the desert floor. Don't let the extreme weather scare you off. Springtime in the Mojave is particularly delightful, as the desert is bursting with life and blanketed by bright patches of wildflowers.

Mount Hood National Forest

There's a reason you periodically hear of exploring hikers trapped on Mount Hood in Oregon - the view and extreme high-altitude experience is worth a little risk. If you go by atv and stay on the marked trail system, you can get a similar thrill without having to pack and carry camping gear, and you'll probably make it out alive at the end of the day.

Mount Hood is incredibly beautiful, and the above-the-clouds (in some cases) ATV trails offer riders great variety and make for a very amusing and scenic ride. This is dream-like riding on a grand scale.

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area

Located along the beautiful Pacific coast in Southern California just north of Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach's Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is a popular ATV destination for sand dune riding right on the ocean coast. Formerly known as the Pismo Dunes, Oceano is a geologically unique location. The prevailing ocean winds create uncommon riding conditions, but all riders must exercise extreme caution in spotting dangerous slipface drop-offs.

Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area

As California's largest State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA), Ocotillo Wells has more than 80,000 acres of desert that's open to off-highway exploration, which is a gargantuan amount of riding possibilities. Even better, Ocotillo is affordable: no fees are collected for camping or day use, and camping is permitted for up to 30 days a year - so stay a while!

Key attractions include the eroded Blow Sand Hill, the 200-foot-high Devil's Slide, Barrel Springs sand dunes, the unusual Shell Reef and Pumpkin Patch sandstone concretions.

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Like no other place on the planet, the Oregon Dunes bring fantastic dune riding, the Pacific Ocean and pine trees together in one remarkable spot. The dunes start at the sea and, at points, stretch two miles inland and reach up to 500 feet above sea level.

The continent's largest expanse of coastal sand dunes, approximately half of the Oregon Dunes are open to motorized vehicles. Campgrounds, staging areas and several annual events make this a top ATV destination.

ATV Winching Tips

1. Dampen the winch cable. During winching, it's a good idea to lay a coat, blanket or even tie a bag to the wire cable to dampen it in case of failure. If it fails and you don't do this, the wire rope could potentially become a high-speed whip - crack!

2. Off the hook. When feeding the winch cable (whether its wire or synthetic) back into the winch, never hold the hook (clasp). Warn includes a Warn-signature red hook strap with all its winches. Hold the hook strap when feeding the cable. If your winch doesn't have one, get one! Warn sells replacements.

3. Add a rock guard sleeve. If your winch cable isn't protected from sharp objects, add a sleeve. This small open-ended rope "sock" looks like a gray Chinese finger trap, but is a wise addition. In the event you must winch over rough, jagged rocks or other obstacles with sharp edges, the sleeve protects the cable from fraying and damage. If the cable is frayed, replace it.

4. Wear gloves when winching. This rings especially true when working with a traditional wire cable. If there is a barb or fray anywhere on the cable, you'll know it as soon as your finger get jabbed and the blood flows. Winching gloves, which Warn also sells, will prevent this accident waiting to happen.

5. Go wireless. Whether it's cell phones, computers or winches, wireless systems are all the rage. A wireless winch operates within a 50-foot radius of your vehicle and improves your recovery options. It has an automatic shut off mechanism and fits in a holster on the handlebars.

6. Go with a roller fairlead when using a snowplow. Because of their frequent lifting and lowering of a plow blade, a winch cable always seems to be moving in and out of the winch. With a standard Hawse fairlead, the cable can be subject to damage, especially if the fairlead already has damage or grooves. A roller fairlead has a large center drum and two side drums to protect the winch rope/cable during plowing.

7. Purchase an accessory pack. Warn offers a winching kit that it says "doubles your pulling power." The kit includes two shackles, snatch block, two tree trunk protectors and a Cordura nylon carrying case. This kit also simplifies individual winching, in case you need to use a tree to get your quad unstuck.

8. Choker chain. Not for your dog, silly, but rather for your quad. If you love to rock crawl, a choker chain is an essential tool. This device lets a sturdy, sharp rock be used as an anchor.

9. Cover that winch. A winch cover, much like and ATV or boat cover, protects the investment that's underneath it. Keep dust, sand, ice and other debris off your winch by adding a cover. Warn's neoprene winch cover resists water and cracking.

10. Go with the Multi-Mount. Warn's versatile winch carrier can be moved from the front or back of an ATV or even your dad's quad to ensure you get out of trouble. The carrier fits inside model-specific front and rear mounts and attaches using a 50-amp Quick-Connect wiring kit.

South Dakota Black Hills ATV Adventure

Everywhere my eyes wandered in the Black Hills of South Dakota looked like a big, glossy photo in a coffee table book. From chalky-sienna cliffs to robust pine forests, picturesque views are commonplace. The ATV riding was anything but. Our ATV riding group wanted to experience a South Dakota adventure, so we booked plane tickets and flew into the Rapid City airport one hot autumn afternoon. Before embarking upon our ATV ride, though, we contacted a local South Dakota ATV riding club, the Off-Road Riders, to guide us through the territory. The ATV trail system in this area is expansive and unmapped. So, with the promise of lunch, the good people of the Off-Road Riders Association took us for a ride.

Upon landing at the airport, we knew we had left big-city urban sprawl far behind. The airport stood alone amidst a backdrop of hazy sky and the Black Hills. We collected our gear from the luggage conveyor and loaded into a 15-passenger van. We drove from the airport through Rapid City, which is the most urbanized of the places we visited in South Dakota. It looks much like a town anywhere across the country, complete with strip malls and fast food restaurants. We then drove through Deadwood, a town with oodles of character. It boasts saloons with sawdust-covered floors, casinos and an "Old West" feel out on the cobblestone streets. Here we felt like gunslingers as we saloon-hopped and dined at Kevin Costner's restaurant (yes, that Kevin Costner).

After a quick bout of sightseeing, we lodged in Lead, South Dakota. Lead is a stone's throw from the buzz of Deadwood, and is a quaint settlement, nestled into the steep hillsides of the Black Hills. The morning after we'd arrived in the Black Hills, we had a fleet of ATVs waiting for us. But, to get to the quads and the planned riding area, we had to drive about 30 minutes to the town of Nemo. The great thing about this section of South Dakota is the towns are generally close together, so a short, half-hour trip could get us to a different locale.

The base camp for our ATV ride was the Nemo Guest Ranch, which offers cabins, snacks and outdoor adventure.The ranch also features horse stables for outdoorsmen who prefer four-legged rides to four-wheeled ones. Of course, we opted for the latter. Our first ATV adventure of the day led us across the highway from the ranch and straight up, so it seemed. We maneuvered our 4WD quads through narrow gates, around an eternal forest of trees and up the Black Hills. The scenery here is best enjoyed when not seated on a running quad - looking around while riding will get an ATV rider in a heap of trouble quickly.

After struggling our way up the hill for about an hour, we pulled off the ATV trail for a rest and some water. As we shut our quads off, we noticed a cave nestled below the beaten path. We carefully stepped down into the cave, which wasn't easy in riding boots. The warmth of the day evaporated with every step downward and the shade and moisture in the cave gave us a chance to cool down. We rested only briefly in the cave, because our excitement to see what awaited us on the ATV trail spurred us back into action. We climbed out of the cave, hopped back upon our quads, re-helmeted and rode upward.

We motored up the ATV trail, encountering dead-fall logs and massive rocks along the way. Every foot of this trail presented a challenge requiring uninterrupted focus. There weren't many chances to take in the surroundings, so we recommend making frequent stops to enjoy the landscape. As we crawled to the top of the mountain, at an elevation of around 4,000 feet, we again pulled off the ATV trail. The view was dizzying and beautiful. The lush pine forests stretched forever below us, and the hills swooped up gracefully from the valley where the Nemo Guest Ranch stands. With the clear, blue sky as a background, the view was astonishing. Looking down, though, was more of an adrenaline rush - the thought of falling from that cliff still jerks me from sleep every once in a while.

It took us an hour and a half to reach the highest elevation, and the descent took almost twice as long. That may seem mixed up, but trust us, going down isn't always as easy as going up. This is not an excursion for first-time ATV riders. The downhill trail had us gripping the bars tighter than normal. And our eyes bulged in a couple of sections. And, I muttered a few things in my helmet during some hairy moments that I'm glad no one else heard. As we descended, we rode over piles of fallen logs and skidded and slid our way down the trail. Just when we thought we could catch our breath after the log slip-and-slide, we reached a step-down rock section. The rock walls of the hill were tight. There was enough room to fit a quad through this pass with about two inches of extra space on each side. Every step down, a total of six, was about a foot-and-a-half steep, which caused the ATV to teeter on its front wheels with each drop.
We wouldn't let the Hills intimidate us, though. We focused on conquering them without being conquered ourselves.

In fact, we were so focused, and so deep in the wooded heart of the trails, that we didn't notice storm clouds gathering above us. After the rocky steps, another log-fall section opened up before us, and the sky above unleashed a rain storm. The freshly watered logs rolled and slipped under the tires of our ATVs. The trail was tough when it was dry, and a steady rain made it even more difficult. Thankfully, the rain lightened just as we survived the last log fall and found a fire road to ride. After struggling over slick logs, slippery rocks and muddy trails, the soft, semi-wet sand of the fire road was a welcome relief. We rode this part of the trail exponentially faster than the technical parts. And, the sunshine returned to dry our gear before the ride was over.

ATV tyres from excellent tyre companies

ATV tires are designed for rough roads, and so if you have any plans to go on a trip where you know there are muddy, snowy, or sandy roads, you will need to get some ATV tires.

The difference between ATV mud tires and regular tires is that they will grip the road and stop your vehicle from slipping and sliding. In other words, they will protect when the going gets rough.

In fact, the entire tire industry has tires for muddy terrain, snowy terrain, and even narrow dry gravel mountain side roads or coastal roads where there is quite a bit of slippery sand. You can tell the difference from the tread and size of the tires. Mud tires have wide treads to allow for a firmer grip on slippery and unpredictable surfaces.

ATV tires also are designed specially for sandy dunes, however, unlike mud tires, these tires are balloon-like and smooth with horizontal treads similar to what you would find in bicycles. You cannot use these kinds of tires on any other surface because it is too risky since the grip is different.

For winter time, shift to snow tires which have wide treads and a smooth surface. The treads look like snow chains that will help you from slipping when the icy snow hits the ground and you have to go out. Other kinds of tyres are for racing and for going on trails where the terrain is sometimes not even familiar territory.

You can get all types of ATV tyres from excellent tyre companies like Cavalier, or find cheaper mud tires when the tire dealers go on sale, or if you are willing to get used mud tires. Since tires are a major expense, tire manufacturers have end-of-season sales regularly, not just to dispose of old stock, but also to keep loyal customers from straying to a competitor tire company.

Mud tires and other tyres are essential vehicle purchase and should not be compromised. What you can do to save a little is get a good second-hand, barely used ATV tires which you might find in the classified or online. Otherwise, wait for the factory sale which is sure to happen before the end of the year.

Chinese ATV are particularly dangerous- US Consumer Products Safety Commission

The US Consumer Products Safety Commission regulates over 15,000 products. All terrain vehicles, ATV's, top the Commission's list as the deadliest product in their portfolio. Each year more than 900 people, many of them children, die from these off-road vehicles. Now an even more dangerous type of ATV has appeared. Looking for a way to break into the lucrative US market, Chinese manufacturers have produced smaller, cheaper ATV's and marketed these as vehicles for children. Where youth models of established ATV brands like Yamaha and Honda can cost upwards of $2000, prices for Chinese ATV's for children and youth average $500.

ATV's are a $5 billion market, and the Consumer Products Safety Commission is concerned about the influx of these small, cheap, vehicles from China. The Commission has recently adopted a set of mandatory safety standards for all ATV's sold in the US.

One model that came to the Commision's attention, was priced at $250. It was sporty-looking and colorful; it also lacked front brakes. Its handlebar assembly had sharp edges, and no protective padding, so that a young rider flung against it could be injured. The Commission voiced their very strong concerns to Fushin, the manufacturer, and in May 2009, Fushin recalled the vehicle.

The small Chinese models are particularly dangerous because they are target for use by children, some as young as 6 years. Unlike cars and motorcycles, there are no federal or state licensure requirements, nor standards for evaluating who is capable of handling one. The American Academy of Pediatrics' policy on ATV's states that the safe use of an All Terrain Vehicle requires as much skill and judgement as driving a car or truck, and that young children have neither the physical strength nor the life experience and judgement to handle an ATV safely in all circumstances. They recommend that children under the age of 16 should be prohibited from driving them. In a 2005 press release, the Academy called ATV's "the perfect recipe for tragedy."Each year more than 100 children die on ATV's, and another 40,000 are treated in emergency rooms.

Concerned Families for ATV Safety is an organization of parents who have lost children in accidents. They point out that there is no evidence that children are safer on "child-sized" vehicles.

An additional concern about ATV's marketed for children is the large number of vehicle components made of lead, or containing lead. Legislation passed last year directs the Consumer Products Safety Commission to limit the lead content of any product primarily used by children under 12. This requirement will not be enforced until 2011, but it will force manufacturers of child-size ATV's to rethink their designs.

ATV Trail Guide on Utah's Piaute

Let's say you wanted to ride an unfamiliar ATV trail system. How would you go about planning your trip? Most of us would probably do a little investigation on the Internet and maybe consult an ATV trail map. We might call the local Chamber of Commerce. But to really get the flavor of an area, there's nothing better than finding a local guide.

Dave Okerlund is a hired gun for anyone who wants to get a true ATV adventure in the Piaute Trail system surrounding Richfield, Utah. It's a part-time job for Okerlund (he's an insurance agent most days), but it's still considered work. Okerlund enjoys riding his Honda Rincon, so it doesn't take much coaxing to get him out of the office to take complete strangers ATV riding.

Okerlund grew up near Richfield, and has been hunting in the mountains around the area most of his life. He's been in Richfield for the last 33 years, and has been riding ATVs since the early days. He used to guide for the large group rides at the Jamboree, but now, he's content to stick to small groups and private ATV rides.

"I used to do an ATV ride called 'Dave and Woody's Fast-and-Hard Ride,'" recalls Okerlund, "but people were riding above their ability. That kind of scared me, liability wise. We'd ride on some pretty treacherous terrain, and we had a guy go off a cliff and hurt himself. That rung the bell for us - that we need to be more cautious."

Now, Okerlund is happy to simply show Richfield visitors some great ATV trails. "I would just do it for anybody; it's an opportunity to go for a ride," says Okerlund. "Ireally love to hunt and be outdoors. An ATVlets you get out of town fast."

Once out of town, though, Okerlund doesn't mind pausing occasionally to share some history. We spent time on some uncharted ATV trails that used to be "wood"roads, where early settlers pulled wagons by mule to gather firewood to burn through the winter. The trails, while perfectly legal to ride ATVs on, aren't on any maps, and it's unlikely most people would find their way without the services of a guide.

ATV Safety First

Okerlund, largely because of his background in insurance, is a stickler for safety. "Liability is first and foremost in my mind, because we live in such a litigious society," says Okerlund. "One of the things that's [important to] me is to get a group that is pretty well balanced in their ability. It's really no fun to guide someone when they're not having a good time or are scared."

Okerlund usually rides ATVs with his buddy, Dave Ogden. The two of them are familiar with the most of the trails they ride on, and try to assess the ATV skill levels of the folks they guide and choose appropriate routes. "The Great Western Trail runs from Mexico all the way to Alaska, and there's a lot of Great Western Trail that goes through Utah that's pretty spectacular. It's well maintained and safe and there's lots of side trails that I enjoy. That's where I would take people."

Entertainment, Too

If you're lucky, you might even get a little music after your ride. Okerlund is an accomplished banjo player. He got involved in folk music in the 1960s and has since progressed to Bluegrass. His group plays around Richfield, and his banjo is never far away. But most of all, you're going to get an entertaining ATV ride if you go out with Okerlund. You'll see things you would miss if you tried to navigate the same ATV trails equipped with only a map. "There are some trails out here that are spectacular. You could just get lost forever."

Luckily, with Okerlund, "lost" is merely a state of mind.
