Spy shots: 2011 VW Touareg hybrid SUV

The next-gen VW Touareg is expected sometime in 2011. Now spy photographers have caught some photos of its hybrid variant.

Under the heavy disguise, first detail we can gather from the spy shots is that the new Touareg is leaner and less bulky than the current model. However, according to some report previously released, the next-generation VW Touareg will be about 300 kilograms lighter than its predecessor (like its "cousin" the Porsche Cayenne), but larger too, and feature a third row of seats. It will be likely to get some considerable styling changes, including a new grill, front apron and newly designed lights.

The new Touareg hybrid will be fitted with a 3.0 liter V6 mated to an electric motor, developing 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. With the electric motor, the vehicle will get another 38 kW (52 hp) and an additional, whopping 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) torque.

As for the rest of the powertrains, the new engine lineup for the 2011 Touareg is expected to come with both a 280 horsepower 3.2-liter V-6 gasoline engine and a 345 horsepower 4.2-liter gasoline V-8. A pair of diesel engines will also be on offer, including 2.7-liter and 3.0-liter turbodiesels.

As you can see, details are still unclear, so we expect more information to be released as we get closer to the launch day.

Spy shots: Next-gen Volkswagen Touareg prototype caught in U.S.

Lately, the next-gen Volkswagen Touareg has been caught undergoing testing in the United States. Unlike previous mules, this is the first time the 2011 Touareg has been caught wearing a production body. Set to be launched in late 2010 as a 2011 model, the new Touareg will be slightly smaller than the current one but will feature a range of more fuel efficient engines and be able to seat up to seven passengers.

As with the current model, the new platform will be shared with the next-generation Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 and will feature increased use of aluminum to keep weight down. It will also be slightly sportier and adopt styling influences from the more recent Tiguan SUV.

The new engine lineup for the 2011 Touareg is expected to start with a 280hp (208kW) 3.2L V6 petrol engine and top out with a 345hp (257kW) 4.2L petrol V8. A pair of diesel engines will also be on offer including 2.7L and 3.0L turbodiesels. All the engines will be matted with a six-speed automatic gearbox, though VW’s new seven-speed DSG may also be made available.

Up front, the next generation Touareg appears to adopt VW's new grille design which has appeared on the Golf VI, Golf Plus and Polo. Other changes appear to include more pronounced character lines, a wider rear bumper and misaligned fuel filler cap. The front of the car also featured a different intake system, positioned lower than on the current model. Shots of the interior also revealed several major changes, including an all-new instrument cluster and a similar steering wheel to the unit found in the Mk VI Golf.

Expect the new Touareg to be unveiled in late 2010, with sales beginning in early 2011.
